Animation Fundamentals:

Riyaaz Roy
Do, 16:00–19:45 Uhr
Raum 203

A practical animation workshop exploring movement, timing, weight and character performance through a series of progressively developed exercises. Students will reinforce fundamental animation principles while developing greater technical precision and control in their animation.

The workshop also introduces essential collaborative animation workflows, including keyframes, breakdowns, inbetweens, exposure, scene preparation and the practical organisation of animation for production. Through exercises involving objects, secondary motion and character movement, students will explore principles such as anticipation, squash and stretch, overlapping action, follow-through, drag and momentum.

Particular attention will be given to analysing and refining walk cycles, with students exploring how timing, spacing, weight, balance and body mechanics can be used to create different physical and expressive qualities. Depending on the students' level, this may extend to more complex forms of movement such as quadruped walks and compositing.

The workshop encourages students to move beyond simply reproducing movement and instead develop an observational, analytical and expressive approach to animation, combining technical precision with experimentation and individual creative development.
